Actions Speak Louder than Words in NSU’s Production of “Tick…Tick…BOOM”

Cory Niles, Shanon Patek and Adam Sahli

Released April 1, 2008

(ABERDEEN, SD) Pondering the choices we make and the courage it takes to follow your dreams is the theme in Jonathon Larson’s autobiographical musical “Tick…Tick…BOOM!” The Northern State University department of theater will present the acclaimed musical on Apr. 17-19, on the main stage of the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center. Tickets go on sale on Mon, April 7, in the NSU bookstore.

Larson, who best known for his hit Broadway blockbuster “RENT,” originally intended the “rock monologue” to reflect his journey as he attempted to establish himself in theater in the early 1980s. After his untimely death in 1996, producer Victoria Leacock, who had worked with Larson for more than a decade, asked David Auburn to restructure the piece. Known for the Pulitzer Prize winning play, “Proof,” Auburn recreated “Tick…Tick…BOOM,” adding two characters to the piece to round out the musical.

The NSU production will feature three seasoned players in the roles of Jonathon, Michael and Susan. Cory Niles, Gettysburg, will portray composer Jonathan, Adam Karal Sahli, Aberdeen will play Jonathon’s best friend Michael and Shanon Patek, Watertown, will play the part of Jonathon’s girlfriend, Susan.

Daniel Yurgaitis, NSU director of theater, directs and stages the production, and Larry Wild, NSU technical director will provide the set and light design. Music faculty members, Raouf Zaidan and Robert Vodnoy, will be vocal and music directors. Seth Honerman, Sioux Falls, serves as stage manager.

“Tick…Tick…BOOM” will be performed nightly on Apr. 17-19, at 7:30 p.m. Advanced tickets are $12, with discounts available for seniors and high school students. Tickets increase $2 at the door. For additional information, call 626-2563. This musical contains adult language.
