Weller to Present Senior Art Show

Released April 22, 2008

(ABERDEEN, SD) Crystal Weller, Aberdeen, will present her senior art exhibition featuring work created during her time spent at Northern State University. Weller’s exhibition entitled “Essence of Vitality,” will be on display in the President’s Gallery located in the second floor of Spafford Hall on the NSU Campus. The exhibition will run from April 28 through July 31. There will be an artist’s reception in the gallery on May 1, beginning at 7 p.m. The reception is free and the public is welcomed to join.

Weller’s exhibition will include many of her paintings and drawings as well as printmaking and photography.

“I chose ‘Essence of Vitality’ because all of the subject matter that will be represented in my show deals with life and the living being, from the human figure to the much smaller, but not lesser, aspect of life such as the flower,” said Weller.

Weller, a 2004 graduate of Aberdeen Central High School, is the daughter of Scott and Jacqueline Weller of Aberdeen. She will graduate in May with a BA in Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting and drawing. She chose NSU for a variety of reasons including location, scholarship opportunities, and the high reputation of the art and music faculty.

While a student at NSU, Weller received many honors including a third place finish in the National Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Creative Patriotic contest, Friends of the Arts award for Outstanding Support of the Arts by a Student, induction into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, being included on the 4.0 Dean’s List, being selected as principal violinist for the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony, being chosen to be a new student orientation leader, being a member of the Order of the Maroon and Gold, and being chosen by her peers as a Gypsy Day Royalty Candidate in 2007. She was also an active member of the NSU Highlights Dance Team.

“Crystal is an outstanding student. Her recent works in painting and drawing demonstrate a remarkable sense of aesthetics, craft and insightful content,” said Pete Kilian, NSU Professor of Art. “I expect we will hear more from her (and about her) in years to come.”

Weller plans on continuing with her artwork and hopes to earn her Masters of Fine Arts degree, and plans to someday open a gallery of her own.
