Gayle Bortnem Named Outstanding Faculty Member at NSU

(ABERDEEN, SD) Dr. Clyde Arnold, Northern State University Provost/
Vice President of Academic Affairs, announced the recipient of this
year’s Outstanding Faculty Member Award is Dr. Gayle Bortnem.
Bortnem was selected for this honor based on her service to the
community, as well as teaching and research excellence at NSU. Bortnem,
who joined the NSU faculty in 2000, is an assistant professor of
education.
“During her time at Northern State University, Gayle has demonstrated
a true commitment to teaching, scholarship and service,” said
Dr. Tom Hawley, Dean of the NSU School of Education. “She
has enhanced every academic program she works with and has had a
remarkable ability to improve instructional effectiveness of both
pre-service ad practicing educators who work with her.”
Bortnem currently serves as the vice president of the South Dakota
Association for the Education of Young Children (SDAEYC), as well
as serving on the Crazy Horse Memorial Scholarship Committee, the
Desire-to Learn pilot program, NSU’s Child Care Board, the
Teacher Education Council, and the Northeast South Dakota Head Start
Advisory Board. She is also the faculty advisor for NSU’s
student chapter of SDEAYC. She recently received a grant from the
Knight Foundation to host an Early Childhood Academy which was held
in January. The successful program will again be held in September.
“Dr. Bortnem has been a dedicated leader for Northern State
University for many years,” said Bortnem’s collegue,
Dr. Kraig Kono. “She has consistently proven to be a strong
advocate for early childhood education issues at NSU, the Aberdeen
region and South Dakota.”
Bortnem, an NSU alumna, was honored during the spring commencement
ceremonies which were held Sat, May 10, at the NSU Barnett Center.
