NSU to Represent at Beijing Olympics

Released August 4, 2008

(ABERDEEN, SD) Two Northern State University students, and one graduate, have been given the opportunity to embark on the adventure of a lifetime as they travel to Beijing, China to volunteer for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Jordan Palmer, Huron; D.J. Mounga, Aberdeen; and Raquel Heinle, Jamestown, N.D.; will travel to the Beijing Olympics as part of the Community Collaborations International (CCI) program.
According the organizations web site, “CC International works with universities, high schools, youth programs, families, church groups and others to provide support for service oriented travel in the U.S. and internationally. Our goal is to place volunteers where they are needed most and to provide a safe and fulfilling volunteer experience.”
“I worked with CCI six months after Hurricane Katrina leading an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip to Mississippi to do relief work,” said Palmer. “Heinle led an ASB the year after and learned of the trip to China and here we are!”

This year’s trip to China is the second for Heinle who participated last August in CCI's volunteer leadership program to learn about Beijing and China, and prepare to bring over another 100 students to volunteer this year during the Olympics.

The trio wanted to find a way to share their experience with their family, friends and the NSU community, and after collaborating with Brenda Dreyer, NSU Director of University Relations and Deb Walker, Director of the NSU Counseling Center, they decided to set up individual blogs recounting their Olympics experiences.

“We all thought it would be a great idea to document our time in China by blogging so that our families and friends could keep up to date with our daily activities and see pictures of the amazing sites and activities we are taking part in,” said Palmer.

Though the trio will be spending the majority of their time volunteering, they do have plans to take in some of the events and sites of China including visits to the Great Wall, The Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Buddhist temples, Tiananmen Square, street markets and touring a silk factory. All three plan to update their blogs daily though their busy schedules may prevent them from updates everyday.
