Northern Galleries Announces “Many Windows, Many Worlds” Opening Exhibition - Minnesota Based Kevin Flicker, Featured Artist

Released August 19, 2008

Northern Galleries Announces “Many Windows, Many Worlds” Opening Exhibition - Minnesota Based Kevin Flicker, Featured Artist(ABERDEEN, SD) Ceramics, from Minnesota based artist Kevin Flicker, will open show the “Many Windows, Many Worlds” 2008-09 Northern Galleries exhibitions at Northern State University. “Kevin Flicker: Recent Works,” will open on Mon, Aug. 25, and will be on display until Oct. 10, in the Student Center Gallery on the NSU campus.

The inspiration for “Many Windows, Many Worlds” came from a painting by Mario Kiran, University of South Dakota, who will be showing at Northern from Feb. 2 - Apr 3, 2009,” said Dr. Bill Hoar, Director of the Northern Galleries.

Flicker, who joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) in 1987, teaches a variety of ceramic courses. He has exhibited his work throughout the upper Midwest, and was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award from the College of Continuing Education in 2001. In the summer of 2003, along with a group of current and former students, he built UMM’s first wood fired kiln capable of firing stoneware and porcelain.
Flicker’s pieces have many inspirations. “It is difficult to name all the influences on my work. In a sense all the pots I have ever seen have touched me for better or worse. Certainly Korean and Japanese folk pottery, especially Karatsu pots, have been pivotal. Native American pots have also left a strong mark,” writes Flicker. “I must also acknowledge the rich heritage of functional Minnesota stoneware, particularly during the last half-century. I am especially indebted to my good friend and mentor Richard Bresnahan for sharing his passion for clay and life itself.”

“In Kevin Flicker’s pieces we see a world where both elemental approaches to pottery making and noble cultural traditions are celebrated,” said Hoar.
The public is invited to view Flicker’s ceramics in the Student Center Gallery which is located on the second floor of the NSU Student Center.
