University/Civic Symphony Announces Auditions, Concerts
Released August 19, 2008
(ABERDEEN,
SD) The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony (AUCS) announces auditions
for the 2008-09 concert season. Membership in the orchestra is open
to all qualified NSU students and community members. Auditions for
the orchestra will be held on Sep. 2-3, 2008 in room 109 in the NSU
Johnson Fine Arts Center with the orchestra music director, Robert
Vodnoy. Interested musicians are needed and encouraged to audition
for all sections of the orchestra, though there is a particular need
in the strings, flute, oboe, bassoon and horn sections.
Interested musicians can sign up for an audition time on the
schedule posted outside room 109 of the Johnson Fine Arts Center, or
by calling Dr. Vodnoy (626-2519) or the Fine Arts Office (626-2497).
For the audition, musicians should bring a short solo and a 2- or 3-
octave scale.
Full orchestra rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 p.m.
in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. There are also string rehearsals
(primarily for college students, but community members are welcome
to attend) on Thursdays from 4-4:50 p.m.
The 2008-09 season of the orchestra will include five concerts
beginning on Nov. 23, with “Beethoven’s 1808 Monster Concert.” The
program is a celebration of an historic concert which Beethoven
presented in 1808 and includes excerpts from Beethoven’s fifth and
sixth symphonies. The “Choral Fantasy” and “Mass in C Major” will be
performed with the NSU Collegiate Choir, and the concert aria “Ah!
Perfido,” will feature Darci Bultema, a member of the NSU voice
faculty.
Other concerts include an “OrpheusFest” with music by Gluck and
Offenbach in February, and the “NSU Concerto/Aria Competition
Winners Concert” and the annual “All-City Strings Concert” in April,
2009. The orchestra also performs on the “Holiday Extravaganza
Concert” in December, 2008 and members of the orchestra will form
the pit orchestra for the Fall Musical “Fiddler on the Roof.”
