NSU’s Most Senior Faculty Member to Present Piano Recital
Released August 26, 2008
(ABERDEEN,
SD) Northern State University’s most senior faculty member, Dr.
Allan Jacobson, will present a program of piano solos on Fri, Sept.
5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall in the Johnson Fine Arts
Center on the NSU Campus.
Dr. Jacobson, who joined Northern in 1976, performs as a solo
pianist, accompanist and chamber musician. He received his
undergraduate degree in music education at Northern State, and his
Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the
University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Dr. Jacobson will be playing two sonatas by the Spanish monk Padre
Antonio Soler, a suite of pieces by French impressionistic master
Claude Debussy, titled “Estampes.” The three movements of that suite
are “Pagodas,” "Evening in Granada,” and “Gardens in the Rain.” He
will also be performing a nocturne and an etude by Frederic Chopin,
an etude by Alexander Scriabin, and an etude-tableau by Sergei
Rachmaninoff.
“I enjoy playing baroque keyboard music, and the sonatas of Spanish
composer Antonio Soler are a fascinating alternative to those of
Scarlatti. Debussy has always been a favorite of mine, and the
Estampes are so colorful with the exotic Pagodas, the sultry Spanish
picture of Evening in Granada, and the Gardens in the rain,” said
Jacobson. “The romantic composers are high on the list of every
pianist, and probably audiences as well. My program closes with an
absorbing progression of pieces in quite a variety of moods.
There is no charge for this event and the public is cordially
invited to attend. For information on Jacobson, or the NSU School of
Fine Arts, visit www.northern.edu.
