NSU music department presents choir tour, home concert

ABERDEEN, S.D. – “Gloria” is the theme of the Northern State University music department’s annual choir tour and home concert.

The home concert is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Aberdeen’s First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Kline St. The concert is free and open to the public. It will feature performances by the NSU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, directed by Dr. Timothy Woods. It will also include a scene from the NSU Opera Theater, under the direction of Dr. Darci Bultema and Michael Skyles, assisted by Dr. Allan Jacobson.

The Concert Choir will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” with the assistance of Dr. Jacobson. Solo and duet movements of the piece will be sung by students from the choir: sopranos Emily Davis, Yvonne Freese and Katie Wegleitner; and mezzo sopranos Alexa Overweg and Rebecca Fahey.
The Chamber Singers’ pieces will be highlighted by two works that they will perform in the “Christmas on the Prairie” in Hoven on Dec. 8: Anton Bruckner’s “Ave Maria” and Arvo Pärt’s “Magnificat.”

The home concert will conclude with the invitation to NSU music alumni to join the Concert Choir in singing Rachmaninoff’s “Bogoroditse devo” and “O Holy Night,” which will feature graduating seniors as soloists.

Prior to the home concert, the groups – along with the NSU Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Wendy van Gent – will also tour the region. They will perform at the following times and locations:
