ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Professor of History Dr. Ric Dias
will be the featured speaker at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial service on Saturday, April 27, in Aberdeen.
The event, set for 11 a.m. at Anderson Park on Sixth Avenue Southeast, commemorates the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, said Chuck Webster, chairman of the committee that planned the service. The committee is comprised of members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
Dias, who has worked at Northern since 1995, has taught courses on the Vietnam War that have included presentations by Vietnam veterans.
Also at Saturday’s service, the servicemen from Brown County who were killed in the conflict will be recognized, Webster said. Any of their families in attendance – called Gold Star Families – will also be recognized, he said.
A luncheon, open to the public, will follow the event at the VFW. Freewill donations will be accepted.
Webster said organizers hope to get a group of Vietnam veterans together to see if they want to plan an annual event. Legislators this year passed a law making March 30 a working holiday, Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. The law goes into effect July 1, so the first holiday will be March 30, 2014.
