Marriage, backwards and forward, in NSU Theater’s ‘The Last Five Years’
ABERDEEN, S.D. – NSU Theater will present “The
Last Five Years” in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Choir Room at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

The unique two-character musical, written by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, explores a five-year relationship between rising novelist Jamie Wellerstein and struggling actress Cathy Hyatt. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie's is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple first met). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.
“The Last Five Years” continues NSU Theater’s Showcase Theatre Productions, which feature small musicals done in intimate settings, showcasing the best of new musical theater writers and NSU Musical Theater majors. “The Last Five Years” features Eli Corbett (Lead) in the role of Jamie Wellerstein and Emily Davis (Aberdeen) in the role of Cathy Hyatt. Corbett was last seen as Kyle the UPS Guy in this fall’s “Legally Blonde,” while Davis played Paulette, the hairdresser who falls for Kyle. But this time they are paired in a different kind of romantic relationship.

The six-piece orchestra accompanying them includes Ron Parker, keyboard; Stuart Davidson, cello; and NSU students Katarzyna Jedeluk (Chicago), violin, Taylor Johnson (Aberdeen), cello, Jordan Siedel (Rapid City), guitar, and Natalie Allcock (Britton), keyboard bass. Joseph Weseloh (Watertown) is vocal director, Seth Honerman (Sioux Falls) will direct the production, Jessica Massa (Winner) will design the set, Rebecca Fahey (Spearfish) will create the costumes, Eric Derington (Taft, Calif.) will design the lighting and Sarah Honerman (Sioux Falls) will stage manage.

General seating for Showcase productions are $10. No discounts or passes are available for this special two-night event. Tickets are available at the NSU Wolf Shoppe (bookstore) and at the door. The Wolf Shoppe is open 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Monday-Friday and accepts cash and checks only. Because of some adult language, this production is recommended for high school age and older. For more information, call 605-626-2563.
