ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will host the 61st annual Mathematics Contest on April 16. The contest will begin at 10 a.m. at the Barnett Center, and awards will be presented at 1 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center auditorium. The public is welcome to attend the awards ceremony only.
Contest director and NSU mathematics professor Dr. A. S. Elkhader anticipates that about 1,200 ninth- through 12th-graders from approximately 50 area schools will participate.
The contest features four divisions: elementary algebra, geometry, advanced algebra and senior math. Elkhader and other faculty members – Dr. Ricardo Rojas, Dr. Ray Jensen and Dr. Bill Haigh – will be responsible for constructing tests for each of the divisions.
In addition to individual awards in each division, the school with the highest percentage combined score will receive a traveling trophy. Each coach of the schools with first-place winners will receive a plaque.
Students participating in the senior math portion of the event may submit completed NSU scholarship forms to be considered for NSU math scholarships.
