ABERDEEN, S.D. – Three Northern State University students will display their artwork in a senior art exhibition March 31-April 11 in the Student Center Gallery.
The opening reception for Emily Hansen, Hillarey Holland and Andy McGuire will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the gallery. Their exhibit is titled “Ideation: Turning Ideas into Reality.”
Hansen is an advertising design major with a business minor. She grew up near Mitchell, graduating from Mitchell High School in 2010, and is the daughter of Douglas and Holly Hansen of Letcher.
Hansen’s specialization is in advertising design, but she will showcase works in advertising design, digital illustrations and photography.
Hansen has worked with all professors in the NSU School of Fine Arts
in various classes, but her main professor as an advertising design major has been Sara Christensen Blair.
The design program and small class sizes were factors in her decision to attend NSU.
“The design program here is just what I was looking for, and I really thought the smaller class sizes would make me feel like a more important part of the school community,” she said.
Hansen will graduate in May. Her future plans are to work as a graphic/advertising designer at a local design firm in Aberdeen.
Holland is majoring in advertising design. She grew up in Britton, graduating from Britton-Hecla High School in 2010. Holland is the daughter of Keith Holland and Troy and Lisa Dahme, all of Britton.
Holland will show artwork ranging from graphic design to photography to digital imaging.
At NSU, Holland has studied with Sara Christensen Blair, Greg Blair and Nadya Preszler.
Holland said she transferred to Northern from St. Cloud State University her freshman year after she realized the small-town life was more for her.
“NSU offers a tight-knit community, and the professors here at NSU are down-to-earth and are dedicated to the success of their students,” she said.
She will graduate in May. As for future plans, “I hope to find a graphic design job in the area, doing what I love.”
McGuire, who will graduate in May, is majoring in advertising design. He grew up in Lake Preston, graduating from Lake Preston High School in 2005. McGuire is the son of Rick and Liz McGuire of Lake Preston.
His artistic method of choice is graphic design through Adobe computer programs. He studied with Nadya Preszler, Sara Christaensen Blair, Greg Blair and Keum-Taek Jung. At the exhibition, he will show works encompassing advertising, branding, graphic design and abstract style.
McGuire said he chose Northern “for the more intimate learning experience.”
He will graduate in May, and his future plans are to work for an in-state design firm and do freelance work.
