ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State University students voted last week whether to ban smoking on the NSU campus. The final vote was 247 in favor of the smoking ban and 116 against.
The vote was conducted electronically by the NSU Student Senate and took place on Wednesday through Friday.
"Given the extremely small sample size, the discussions with Faculty Senate and the other employee groups will be difficult, said NSU President Jim Smith. "Clearly, there was not a groundswell of reaction from the student body on this issue."
The referendum will now pass to the faculty and staff to give their opinion on the proposed referendum.
Currently, 3,622 students are enrolled at the university.
The NSU Senior Cabinet will weigh all results at a future meeting.
