ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University TRiO programs are hosting a cancer awareness event.
Walk for a Cure will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the NSU Barnett Center. The walk is in support of a Northern student’s mother, who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. Participants are encouraged to wear gray in support of brain cancer awareness.
The event is sponsored by Northern’s TRiO Student Support Services and TRiO Upward Bound. It is held in conjunction with National TRiO Day, in which TRiO programs from across the U.S. raise awareness about the benefits of TRiO.
Federal TRiO programs, developed to improve the college retention and graduation rates of students who are first-generation, low-income or who have disabilities, serve students in junior high through graduate school. NSU’s two TRiO programs offer services such as academic advising, tutoring and information on financial aid. A television ad to raise awareness about what TRiO programs do is currently running statewide.
For Thursday’s Walk for a Cure, people may register as a team or participate and collect pledges individually. For more information, contact Northern TRiO offices at 605-626-7782.
