Merry TubaChristmas celebrates its 27th year in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University is hosting its 27th annual "Merry TubaChristmas" on the NSU campus on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.

Any level player (elementary, junior high, high school, college or adult tuba or euphonium) is eligible to participate. The more the merrier! The day will begin with registration 9-9:30 a.m. the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center Band Room. Rehearsal will start at 9:30 a.m. and conclude around 11 a.m.

Participants are encouraged to show their holiday spirit. Prizes donated from local sponsors will be awarded to the best-dressed tubist or euphoniumist.

TubaChristmas was conceived in 1974 as a tribute to the late tubist William J. Bell, born Christmas Day 1902. Bell is the grandfather of tuba performance in the United States. Since that time, TubaChristmas celebrations have spread to all 50 states with hundreds of performances.

The Aberdeen TubaChristmas was founded in 1985 by former dean of the NSU School of Fine Arts Lonn Sweet. The Aberdeen performance was the first of its kind in the state of South Dakota. Since that time, TubaChristmas performances annually take place in Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Huron and Rapid City. The leadership and tradition of the Aberdeen TubaChristmas has continued with NSU Director of Bands Boyd Perkins.

TubaChristmas performances have been important in helping to gain respect and recognition for the tuba and euphonium, and to generate a broader public awareness for their existence and musical potential. TubaChristmas tuba/euphonium mass choir has attracted considerable public and media attention. The sound of this unique ensemble is indeed a memorable experience.

The performance schedule is as follows:

Lakewood Mall Center Stage area:  Noon
Wal-Mart:                                         1 p.m.
Shopko:                                            2 p.m.

These appearance times are all approximate, so anyone who plans to attend one of the caroling performances should be aware that actual starting times may vary.

A registration fee of $8 per person is required to help cover expenses. Also available for purchase are official TubaChristmas scarves and stocking hats.
