ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State University faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend open forums with the four final candidates for NSU University Relations director.
As part of the forums, each candidate will give a presentation they’ve prepared on the role of marketing in recruitment and retention.

Etkin, of Minneapolis, is principal of Etkin & Associates, a public relations firm whose clients have included the University of Minnesota Extension Service, where he was involved in the Honeycrisp apple promotional campaign. Etkin has more than 30 years' experience in communications, management and administration. He has been communications director for the Perpich Center for Arts Education, Golden Valley, Minn.; and communications manager for Midwest Assistance Program Inc., New Prague, Minn.
He has a master's degree in mass communication/journalism and broadcasting from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor's degree in psychology/English and sociology from State University of New York, Fredonia, N.Y.

Blackstone, of Aberdeen, is an NSU admissions representative with experience in marketing, communications and public relations. At NSU, Blackstone's duties include coordinating marketing and communications for all admissions representatives; facilitating growth, sales and marketing strategies; increasing awareness and generating enrollment. Blackstone previously was public relations and marketing director for the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce and has been a pharmaceutical sales trainer and hospitalist. She is marketing coordinator and a board member for Boys and Girls Club in Aberdeen and a member of the Foundation Board for Safe Harbor in Aberdeen.
Blackstone has a bachelor's degree in corporate business and communications from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.

Ulbricht, of Kenosha, Wis., has been a marketing communications manager in higher education for more than 20 years and owns Ulbricht Marketing, a marketing and communications consulting firm. Ulbricht has worked at or provided services for private and public higher education institutions in the Midwest and Northeast, including the University of Wisconsin-Parkside; Antioch University Midwest, Yellow Springs, Ohio; Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, North Chicago; SUNY Empire State College; University of Wisconsin-Whitewater; Youngstown State University; and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He previously was director of marketing and communications for Antioch University Midwest.
Ulbricht has a master's degree in communication arts in film studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Smith, of St. Paul, Minn., has leadership experience in nonprofit development, humanitarian aid, marketing communications and public relations. He is an assistant professor (adjunct and temporary) teaching journalism at Bethel University in St. Paul, and a freelance photographer. Smith was vice president of Padilla Speer Beardsley Public Relations, where he acted as senior marketing strategist for clients including businesses in the agriculture and biofuel industries. As communications consultant with Smith.com Public Relations, he provided marketing and public relations services to healthcare, medical device and technical firms. In the community, Smith has been involved in international assistance and support programs.
Smith has a master's degree in science journalism from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Minneapolis; and a bachelor's degree in English from Bethel University.
