ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University art department faculty member, Gratia Brown’s art exhibition entitled “Recontextualize” will be displayed in the Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery.

Brown’s exhibition will be showcased through March 31. An opening reception for the event will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the JFAC Gallery.

Brown joined the NSU art department in the fall of 2015, becoming the new artist in residence in ceramics and is currently the Lecturer in Art for Ceramics.

Brown loves to make things, break things and use the resulting debris to create artwork that celebrates the poetic moments contained in ceramic fragments.

Her work is shown in galleries in the U.S. and abroad.  Solo shows include "Ballast" at the Wartburg College in Iowa and "Vestige and Facture" at the MacNider Museum of Art in Iowa.  Recent invitational and juried shows include the Gandee Gallery in New York, Mighty Tieton Warehouse in Washington, Pewabic Pottery in Missouri, Mulvane Art Museum in Kansas, New Bedford Museum of Art in Massachusetts, Archie Bray Foundation in Montana, Bradley University in Illinois, GoggleWorks Art Center in Pennsylvania, The Ceramics Center in Iowa and the Bizenware Traditional Industry Hall Gallery in Bizen, Japan.

Residencies include The Hungarian Multicultural Center, Budapest, Hungary, I-Park in Connecticut, Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Maine, The Ceramics Center in Iowa and UND in North Dakota.

She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and her Bachelor of Arts in the History of Art & Architecture and Anthropology from University of Pittsburgh.

The Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
