ABERDEEN, S.D.  – Northern State University’s International Friendship Family Program is taking applications for families to share their American experience while making students feel welcome in our community.

Through the NSU Friendship Family Program, international students spend time with their “Friendship Family” doing family things at least once a month and keep in contact weekly. The name “Friendship Family” is used instead of “Host Family” because the students are responsible for themselves financially and generally live on campus.

“Families are nervous at first, but once they start participating in the program they have a great time and speak about what a positive impact this has had on their lives,” said Heidi Hepola, coordinator of the NSU Friendship Family Program. “The Friendship Family Program is about bringing your family closer together while making friends with international students, and focuses on fun.”

To apply, fill out the online Family Application, and share information such as hobbies and availability for a customized friendship connection. Participating in this program includes monthly scheduled activities that often involve discounts to featured events in the community.
