ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Art Department will sponsor the Fandom Dakota Convention (FANDAKCON) in the Student Center on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

FANDAKCON is comprised of a group of individuals who are passionate about various genres of pop-culture fandoms, such as comics, anime, steampunk, science fiction, gaming and many more areas of interest - joining forces and creating a memorable event for our community.

This event will feature door prizes, a raffle and free swag bags for the first 30 people who come to the event. The keynote speaker is Tom Nguyen, a 16-year veteran in the comics industry.

According to the FanDakCon website, “Tom is a Vietnamese-American visual artist who began his professional career freelancing for comic book publishers such as DC Comics and Marvel Comics from the age of 19. Building his name as an inker, he has worked on major titles such as ‘Batman,’ ‘Green Lantern,’ ‘JLA’ and ‘Superman: The Man of Steel’ among others.

Tom has branched out into other areas professionally, such as penciling, painting and authoring two instructional books on comic book art.”

The convention will also hold discussion panels on topics such as self-publishing and self-promotion. These panels will be led by NSU students and alums Tom Schinderling of Aberdeen, Bobbi Pasecki of Aberdeen, Bryce Mills of Aberdeen and Emily Fesler of Aberdeen.

A cosplay contest will also be held, beginning at 5 p.m.
