ABERDEEN, S.D. – Travis Netzer, lecturer of tuba and euphonium at Northern State University, and William Wieland, an accomplished composer and pianist, will present a captivating recital of music for tuba and piano on Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Krikac Auditorium.

The recital is free and open to the public, and for those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available on the NSU Music Department Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MusicNSU/.

The program will showcase a diverse selection of works by renowned composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Gary Ziek, and Anthony Plog.

Netzer, an Ipswich, S.D., native, earned his bachelor's degree in music education at Northern State University. During his undergraduate studies, he competed in the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Brass Competition, reaching the national level twice and placing runner-up in his second appearance. Netzer received a graduate assistantship to pursue his master's degree in music performance at Western Michigan University and later earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University, where he studied under Dr. Deanna Swoboda. In 2014, he advanced to the semifinals of the International Tuba Euphonium Solo Competition. Recently, Netzer received a developing artist grant from the South Dakota Arts Council to work on his innovative project, "Rock Tuba," which incorporates electronics to distort his sound and perform rock music.

Wieland, a North Dakota native, is a highly respected educator, composer, and pianist. His compositions have garnered numerous awards and performances, and he is frequently sought after as a piano accompanist in the region. Wieland holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in composite music (piano) from Valley City State College, a Master of Arts degree in theory and composition from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and a Doctor of Music degree in composition from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He has shared his expertise as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, DePaul University, and Northwestern University.
