S.D. Supreme Court Chief Justice to speak at spring commencement

ABERDEEN, S.D. – South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson will deliver the spring commencement address at Northern State University.

The commencement ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in the NSU Barnett Center.

Gilbertson received his undergraduate degree from South Dakota State University in 1972 and his Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota, School of Law in 1975.

Gilbertson worked in private practice until his appointment to the circuit court bench in 1986. He served as a Circuit Judge for the Fifth Judicial Circuit until he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1995. He has served as chief justice since 2001.

His honors have included the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the National Center for State Courts and the 2014 Grass Roots Award by the American Bar Association, both for his defense of judicial independence.
