NORA STAAEL EVERT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH STIPEND


One summer stipend will be available from the Nora Staael Evert Fund to support faculty engaged in scholarly research projects. Eligible projects may include any professional scholarly work requiring substantial effort that will lead to publication and public presentation of the project and results.

Faculty Eligible to Apply:

  • Full time NSU faculty members.
  • Faculty willing to devote at least 4 weeks during the summer of 2007 to the project during which time no other paid professional activity will occur.
  • Faculty who receive funding will be ineligible to apply for future support from the Nora Staael Evert Fund for five years.

Student Research Assistants:

  • Faculty members have the option to include qualified students as research assistants.
  • Students will be paid $10 per hour for their work.
  • Maximum stipend per student may not exceed $920, and no more than $1,840 is available for student labor per project. Funding of student labor needs prior approval.

Project Guidelines:

  • Previously funded projects are ineligible.
  • Eligible projects must involve substantial scholarly activity that will lead to publication and public presentation of the project and results.
  • Eligible projects must have value to the faculty member's academic profession and to Northern State University.
  • Projects must be within the faculty member's area of expertise as evidenced by his or her professional academic credentials.
  • To be considered for funding, faculty must complete the Nora Staael Evert Research Stipend Application Form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Examples of research activities appropriate for funding are those as defined in the scholarly research section of Appendix G of the BOR contract.

"The product of scholarly activity may take a variety of forms, but it cannot be only for the classroom or take place only in the classroom; it must involve the presentation of one's ideas and works to one's professional peers or the learned public for debate and judgment. Such presentations may occur in a variety of settings, but to be worthy of recognition it is expected at a minimum that a faculty unit member initiate a proposal to present or be invited to present and that the proposal be accepted for outside presentation to a learned audience…

…scholarship and creative activity includes the following and similar activities…

  • publication of the results of research, scholarship, and creative endeavor in scholarly journals and books;
  • textbooks, chapters in professional books, abstracts, book reviews;
  • publication of poems, novels, plays, musical compositions, etc.;
  • exhibition of works of art;
  • creative application of existing technologies;
  • patents on inventions"
  • Projects must be completed between May 15, 2007 and June 30, 2008.

Funding Procedures

  • The stipend will be treated as regular salary payments subject to the normal payroll deductions, such as benefits and taxes.
  • Payment to faculty will be made in two equal installments, one at the end of May 2007 and the second at the end of June 2008.
  • Nora Staael Evert Funds may be used for faculty time only. Any equipment, materials or faculty travel required for the project must be paid for by utilizing other sources.
  • Students will be paid according to their time card records.

Reporting Requirements

  • The faculty member must present the results of the research with Northern's academic community in April 2008.
  • A final written report describing the project accomplishments must be filed with the OIS Office by June 30, 2008. A manuscript ready for publication would fulfill this requirement.
  • A copy of the scholarly work produced as a result of this funding, in final form, must be provided to the Northern State University Library. This copy may be a written manuscript or, in the case of multi-media projects and artwork, may be in the form of slides, photographs, or other electronic media.

Application Process

  • Announcement of the funding opportunity and application forms (see attached) will be disseminated electronically to all faculty members in March 2007.
  • Faculty members applying for funding must submit an original and an electronic copy of the application form to the OIS Office no later than 5:00 P.M. March 23, 2007.
  • All applications will be reviewed by the OIS Advisory Committee. The committee will submit funding recommendations to the Vice President for Academic Affairs by early April 2007.
  • Final funding decisions will be made by the NSU President and the President of the NSU Foundation.
  • Faculty will be notified about funding decisions by April 20, 2007.
