Music Education

As an NSU music major, you can learn to:

  • Teach music to K-12 students
  • Perform and create music, and
  • Develop students’ understanding and appreciation of the art of music.

The instrumental emphasis is for you if you’d like to teach K-12 instrumental music and supervise school music programs. You’ll be encouraged to take vocal courses to strengthen your musicianship.

The vocal emphasis prepares you to teach K-12 vocal and general music and supervise school music programs. You’ll be encouraged to take instrumental courses to strengthen your musicianship.

Our double major in music – instrumental and vocal – is perfect if you’d like to teach in a smaller school district. With this degree, you’ll be qualified to teach grades K-12.

At Northern, you'll get individual attention from our renowned music faculty members who will help you develop your fullest potential.

You'll have plentiful performance opportunities as part of outstanding musical ensembles. NSU brings professional musicians to campus for residencies, workshops, lectures and recitals. Northern ensembles that tour each year include the Marching Wolves, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers.

NSU is a fully accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
