Welcome to the Northern State University’s Reading Clinic distance tutoring program.  Students, in 2nd through 10th grade, and who live outside of the immediate area of Aberdeen, South Dakota have the opportunity to utilize this service.  Each child, referred to as a "tutee", is paired with an NSU Education Major who serves as his/her tutor for a minimum of fourteen and a maximum of eighteen one hour tutoring sessions. Each session is conducted under the expert  supervision of the director of the NSU Reading Clinic, Dr. Timothy Houge.

The tutoring, occurs via web cam technology and includes the research based components of our face-to-face tutoring.  Currently, NSU  provides a web camera and  a headset for those receiving the tutoring.  Although, a computer with a high-speed internet connection must be provided by either the parent or the school, depending upon where the tutoring is occurring, in the home or the school. To date, students in four different states have utilized our distance service and after carefully analyzing the data we have been able to determine that there has be no significant difference in the amount of growth students have made between face-to-face or distance tutoring.

The cost for this service is $60.00 for 18 one-hour tutoring sessions.  Our goal remains consistent—provide affordable high quality literacy tutoring that accelerates a child’s literacy skills. For an example of tutoring via web-cam technology click on the following link.  For further questions please feel free to contact me via e-mail or telephone 605.626.2614.

Dr. Timothy Houge
