About Us
The staff of professionally trained counselors are specialists in the concerns, problems, and issues of college students. Whether you are adjusting to college for the first time, experiencing "sophomore slumps", or are an older returning student balancing school, work and a family, you will find the staff able to help with the challenges you are facing. The Center staff has extensive experience in working with students who have concerns with:

The NSU Counseling Center views college as part of the journey towards personal growth and development. At times, this journey may call for guidance and support. The NSU Counseling Center offers individual and group counseling, as well as substance abuse prevention, education and early intervention to assist in the journey.
Our services are free and confidential to NSU students and their families.

Deb Walker, CCDC III
(M.S. in Education - Counseling and
Guidance, Northern State University, 1985)
Deb’s professional interests include training, working with clients who experience depression, anxiety and stress as well as issues with self-esteem, family-of-origin and grief/loss. She is also a certified chemical dependency counselor, level 3.

Kate Coughlin, CDCT
Kate’s professional interests include working with clients experiencing challenges in the areas of alcohol and other drugs, depression, eating disorders, relationships, identity issues, and GLBT students.

Kelsey Beckstrom
Kelsey graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead and is now working toward her Master’s degree in Agency and School Counseling. Her professional interests are in the areas of stress and anxiety, depression, eating disorders, alcohol and other drugs, and career planning.

Joni Hulbert
Joni graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2001 and is currently working on her Master’s degree in Agency and School Counseling here at Northern. Joni has worked as a group leader/counselor, probation officer, and is a Chemical Dependency Counselor. Her counseling experience includes self harm, relationships, alcohol/chemical use/dependency, sexual issues, eating disorders, grief and a variety of other issues.
