Deep in the Heart of Texas

(or The Wackiest Covered Wagon in the West)

I was greatly impressed with San Antonio and the Alamo in particular.  They really have a great historic site and there is a minimum of political correct gibberish there.  It probably has something to do with being privately funded.  The group that runs the Alamo is something like The Daughters of Don’t Mess With Texas.  The gift shop there is outstanding.  When I was there they were undermanned and were being attacked my marauding tourists, but they managed to hold out for as long as they could, all for the glory of Texas.  When I was inside the actual Alamo building, where they ask all men to take their caps off out of reverence for the dead, there was a kid playing his Game Boy.  Must have been far more interesting than American history.  What a country.
They have a great memorial just outside of the Alamo.  Here you see the representation of Capt. Travis (left) and Davey Crockett (right).  One thing I like about Texas is the pride they take in their great history.  I was embarrassed to be from Minnesota, where we are most famous for producing losing presidential candidates and Jesse Ventura.
Here is a statue of St. Anthony of Padua, for whom San Antonio is named.  This statue is located on the famed river walk of downtown San Antonio.  I thought the river walk was a bit of a let down.  It is just an overpriced shopping mall in a really pretty location.
The Texas State Capital, which is a beautiful building.  On the top of the dome is Anne Richards, who must have had a little too much of her “medicine” and climbed on the roof again.  She just can’t accept that she isn’t governor anymore.
This is the official portrait of then Governor George W. Bush of the great state of Texas.  This, of course, is at the Texas State Capital.  Right next to Bush’s portrait one can find the portrait of Anne Richards, which has Anne with a 40 of Genuine Draft in one hand and a mascara brush in the other.
