NSU Reading Clinic
"The program is phenomenal and unlike any other I’ve come across. ...
We now have something we didn’t have before — HOPE."

"Without this program, our child’s future in school was looking painful—
was painful—regardless of the efforts we’d been making."

"Our son likes to read, but school was not challenging him, so he was bored and starting to act out. The reading clinic challenges him at his pace and he enjoys learning."
"My daughter has gained so much confidence in her reading ability. ... Her
teacher said that her reading has improved by 2 levels. This clinic has
instilled a love of reading that will hopefully last a lifetime."

"Our son used to hate reading, now he even admitted he 'likes to read.'
... He thought he couldn't do it. Now he knows he can."

Clinic sessions are held during the fall and spring semesters.
Students in grades 1-8 who are above, at, or below grade level readers or writers are invited to the clinic.
Each student will work with an NSU elementary/special education major supervised by clinic Director Dr. Timothy Houge. Offered to each child every semester are 14 one-hour tutoring sessions.
You don't have to live in or near Aberdeen to get help from the NSU Reading Clinic. Visit the Distance Tutoring Page to learn more.
Northern State University's Reading Clinic will provide literacy assessment and instruction for 1st through 8th grade students who read above, at, or below grade level while providing opportunities for preservice teachers to develop their knowledge and skills as teachers of reading and writing.

From clinic Director Dr. Timothy Houge: I am pleased to announce the publication of Tutorin’ Tim’s Phonics: Lessons for Reading and Spelling the Sounds of our Language. I wrote this book to be used by parents, teachers, and tutors who know of someone longing to read and spell English accurately, fluently, and effortlessly—a young child, an adolescent, an adult, or someone for whom English is a new language.
If you have ever wished for one phonetic curriculum aimed at teaching beginner readers as well as intermediate readers (those who can read single-syllable words but struggle to read multisyllabic words) - this book is for you. From instruction with two- and three-letter words to polysyllabic words containing Latin and Greek roots, this collection of lessons - developed for a span of reading levels and mindful of the person who feels inept at teaching reading and spelling - is phonics at its best.
