Lesson Summary      "Butterfly Life Cycle" is a lesson for kindergartners, first, or second graders that will teach the four stages of the life cycle of a butterfly.  The students will listen to the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  The students will browse a pre-loaded Internet site showing the four stages.  The students will print the four coloring pages, each portraying one stage of the butterfly's life cycle.  They will decorate each printed page and sequence each stage correctly by gluing them onto a large piece of construction paper.

Lesson Objectives Upon completion of instruction, the students will have:
  1. Identified a butterfly as an insect. 
  2. Identified the four stages of the life cycle of a butterfly. 
  3. Correctly sequenced the four stages. 
Assessment
  1. Students will check the characteristics of an insect against the characteristics of the butterfly from the printed pages of the life cycle. 
  2. Students will decorate and sequence the four stages in correct order on another piece of construction paper. 
Technology to be Used Computer, Internet, printer with paper
Other Materials Big book:  The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Easel, large piece of construction paper, crayons, glue, pencils, dry erase board, dry erase markers
Procedural Activities
  1. Students listen and look at illustrations as teacher reads aloud The Very Hungry Caterpillar. 
  2. Discuss the four stages in the life cycle of the butterfly as portrayed in the book and the characteristics of insects. 
  3. List each stage on the board as students identify it. 

  4.           Egg, Larva, Chrysalis, Butterfly
  5. Visit the site http://www.mesc.usgs.gov/butterfly/butterfly-life-cycle.html.  At the bottom of the site, click on the coloring page command.  Download it to a full size image and print out each image. 
  6. Students decorate each stage and identify the characteristics of an insect on the pages. 
  7. Students glue the pictures on a large piece of construction paper in the correct sequential order.
