Topic Creepy Crawly Creatures
Grade Level K-2
Lesson Summary      Students will learn body parts of insects and compare insects to arachnids.  Students will create a creepy crawly creature in the style of Eric Carle and write a paragraph describing it.
Standards National Content Standards
    English Language Arts Standards
    1.  Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment.  Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.
    5.  Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write using different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
    12.  Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).

Lesson Objectives Upon completion of instruction, the students will have:
  1.  Identified parts of an insect;
  2.  Described differences between insects and arachnids;
  3.  Created their own creepy crawly creatures; 
  4. Written a descriptive paragraph using adjectives.
Assessment
  1. Correctly identify three body parts and six legs on a diagram of an insect.
  2. The Venn diagram will show similarities and differences between insects and arachnids.
  3. Create the creatures with correct body parts in the style of Eric Carle.
  4. The descriptive paragraph will have adjectives describing their creepy crawly creature.

Video:  Eric Carle--Image Writer, paint, tissue paper, glue, scissors
Procedural Activities
  1. Review arachnids (spiders).
  2. Introduce insects the using above books.
  3. Visit Eric Carle's web site and discuss.
  4. View video about Eric Carle.
  5. Construct own creepy crawly creatures in the style of Eric Carle using paint, paper, and glue.
  6. List adjectives describing creepy crawly creatures.  Using these adjectives, students will write a descriptive paragraph about creepy crawly creatures.
