Lesson Plan Title
Family Traditions

Grade Level 3-5
Lesson Summary      In this lesson, the students will interview their parents regarding family holiday traditions.  Upon returning to school, the students will write about holiday traditions using the computer.  The students will bring photos from home of themselves, or their family, or the holiday at their house.  A class booklet will be the final result.  Copies will be made for each student's family.

English Language Arts Standards
5.  Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
6.  Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and nonprint texts.

Social Studies Standards (Middle Grades)
I.  Culture
     c.  explain and give examples of how language, literature, the arts, architecture, other artifacts, traditions, beliefs, values, and behaviors contribute to the development and transmission of culture.
 

National Educational Technology Standards
1.  Use keyboards and other common input and output devices (including adaptive devices when necessary) efficiently and effectively.
5.  Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, Web tools, digital cameras, scanners)  for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and  publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
Lesson Objectives Upon completion of instruction, the students will have:
  1. Interviewed family members about specific topics. 
  2. Written about the information gathered. 
  3. Used the computer as a writing tool. 
  4. Followed specific directions to complete a writing project. 
Assessment
  1. Did the students come to school with information to write about?
  2. Were they able to write about the information gathered using the specified writing instructions?
  3. Did they successfully use the computer as a writing tool following the specified directions for computer usage?
Technology to be Used Computers, scanner, paint program on computer (if needed)
Other Materials Photos, drawings 
Procedural Activities
  1. Talk about interviewing family members and set a date to complete the project. 
  2. Give the students your writing guidelines to follow. 
  3. Give the students your computer guidelines to follow. 
  4. Allow students computer lab time to complete the project. 
  5. Teacher will observe and guide as writing takes place. 
  6. Teacher will do the final editing. 
  7. Teacher will scan the photos into the paper. 
  8. Teacher will laminate and bind into final product. 
  9. Students will take completed booklets home.
