Pioneer Research Through Surfing the Net

Lesson Summary      In this lesson, students will surf an Internet site to obtain historical information about Laura Ingalls Wilder's community.  Students will list information acquired in their pioneer journal.

      b.  demonstrate an ability to use correctly vocabulary associated with time such as past, present, future, and long ago; read and construct simple timelines; identify examples of change; and recognize examples of cause and effect relationships.
      e.  demonstrate an understanding that people in different times and place view the world differently.
III. People, Places, and Environments
      h.  examine the interaction of human beings and their physical environment, the use of the land, building of cities, and ecosystem changes in selected locales and regions.

English Language Arts Standards
8.  Use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, and video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.

Lesson Objectives Upon completion of instruction, the students will have:
  1. Used and acquired information by the surfing the Internet. 
  2. Read about a pioneer family and completed a Venn diagram comparing a pioneer community to the students' community. 
Assessment
  1. Observation of the students' use of the Internet. 
  2. The Venn diagram will be assessed according to criteria as determined by the teacher.

Procedural Activities
  1. Introduce the Internet site. 
  2. Guide students to the different locations within the site. 
  3. Read information at locations within site. 
  4. Have students create a Venn diagram comparing a pioneer community with their own community.
