Lesson Plan Title
Teaching History Through Literature

Topic The Great Depression
Grade Level 9-12
Lesson Summary      This lesson focuses on the Great Depression using the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.  Students will become familiar with the lifestyles of the 1930s, and select one area of interest about which they will create a presentation.  Possibilities include sports, fashion, automobiles, baseball, and finances.  The Internet will be used a research tool, and Power Point will be used as the presentation format.

2.  Students read a wide range of literature from many periods in many genres to build an understanding of the many dimensions (e.g., philosophical, ethical, and aesthetic) of human experience.
8.  Students use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, and video) to gather and synthesize information and to crete and communicate knowledge.

Lesson Objectives Upon completion of instruction, the students will have:
  1. Used the computer as a research tool.
  2. Investigated an historical time period as it relates to the novel.
  3. Demonstrated appropriate presentation and communication skills.
Assessment Students' presentations will be assessed on the following categories:  Internet citations, evidence of research, use of Power Point and Microsoft Word, quality of presentation, quality of communication skills, and relationship between literature and history.
Technology to be Used Computers with Internet access, printers, word processing, presentation software
Other Materials Reference books, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Procedural Activities
  1. Discuss project requirements with students.
  2. Introduce the historical period and the related novel to be read.  Give students a copy of the rubric and possible Internet sites.
  3. In pairs, students will work on a technological project related to the historical period.  They will gain approval for their project from the teacher.
  4. Students will present their project to the class.
