Presidential Pros

Lesson Summary      "Presidential Pros" is a lesson designed to have students research George Washington and Abraham Lincoln using a variety of sources.  Students will use the Internet, a CD-ROM encyclopedia, traditional encyclopedias, and other resource books to do their research and compare information.  The information will be used to write reports about one or both presidents.  Students will also use the information to write facts cards about Washington and Lincoln that will be used with a bulletin board.  They will present their reports to classmates and parents.  This lesson will span several days.

5.  Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
8.  Students use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, and video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.

X.  Civic Ideals and Practices
      a.  examine the origins and continuing influence of key ideals of the democratic republican form of government, such as individual human dignity, liberty, justice, equality, and the rule of law.

7.  Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information, communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning, and pursue personal interests.
Lesson Objectives Upon completion of instruction, the students will have:
  1. Searched several Internet sites for information on Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
  2. Used encyclopedias and other books to find additional information on Washington and Lincoln.
  3. Communicated that information to others in a written report.
  4. Contrasted and compared Lincoln and Washington using a hands-on Venn diagram bulletin board.
Assessment Students will answer questions the teacher provided about the Internet sites they visit.  Students written work will be evaluated using a scoring rubric developed by the teacher.  Students will also be assessed throughout the lesson on cooperation skills and work habits.

Procedural Activities
  1. Students go to the computer lab and work in pairs.  They will answer questions on their Internet guide sheet.  They must visit a minimum of two sites and use other resources.
  2. Each student will write a report, either about one president or a comparison of both.
  3. Students will create a Venn diagram on a bulletin board using fact cards written from the information in their reports.
