Lesson Summary      "Clouds" is a lesson for second graders to discover different types of clouds.  Students will listen to a book that tells about weather and describes the different types of clouds.  They will discuss a worksheet about four kinds of clouds and create a poster using cotton balls.  Students will continue to explore the clouds on Internet sites and complete a worksheet about the information on this site.

Lesson Objectives Upon completion of instruction, the students will have:
  1. Identified four kinds of clouds:  cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and fog.
  2. Created a picture that shows the different types of clouds.
  3. Described different types of clouds on an Internet worksheet.
  4. Identified the cloud types on an Internet site and document on worksheet.

Other Materials Construction paper, glue, cotton balls, felt marker (black)
Procedural Activities
  1. (1 hour)  In the classroom read the book "I Can Read About Weather."  This will introduce the different types of clouds.  Discuss the Internet worksheet.  Create a picture of the four different types of clouds that are listed on the worksheet.  Divide the paper into four boxes.  Glue cotton balls to create the clouds and use a marker to label them.  Use a teacher-created rubric to evaluate.
  2. (1 hour)  In the computer lab, children will explore the following bookmarked Internet site with a partner:  http://www.itdc.sbcss.k12.ca.us/curriculum/weather.html.  The students will view on the site the portion called "Learning About Clouds."
