At the time a student applies for admission to teacher education he/she will be asked, ”Have you ever been convicted of, pled nolo contendere (no contest) to, or received a deferred or suspended sentence for a crime more serious than a parking offense in this or any other state, territory or country?” If the answer is yes to the question, the student will be asked to list the date of the offense, the offense, and the judgment. The form also states, “Be advised that answering ‘yes’ will not necessarily bar you from admission to teacher education or a certification. Each case will be judged on its own merit with respect to time, circumstances, seriousness and type of position by South Dakota Department of Education (S.D.D.O.E.).”
