PLANNING INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS PREPARING FOR THE

TEACHING PROFESSION

Requirements and Suggested Schedule for the Special Education Program, the Elementary Education Program, the Elementary Education/Special Education Double Major, or the Secondary Education K-12 Education Programs

1.    Classes to be taken prior to the junior year:

1.   ENGL 101, English Composition I

2.   SPCM 101, Fundamentals of Speech, or SPCM 215, Advanced Public Speaking, or SPCM 222, Argumentation and Debate

3.   EPSY 302, Educational Psychology and sophomore field experience (This class should be taken during the sophomore year. Also, an admission to teacher education application will be filled out and returned to the education office in GB-109 while enrolled in this class)

4.   Students must complete 15 credits of general education required for the proficiency examinations.

  2.    The above classes must be completed with a minimum of a C grade along with a cumulative GPA of at
least 2.60 and a major GPA of 2.60 to be eligible for admittance to teacher education. Admittance usually
occurs toward the end of the sophomore year.  Once admitted to teacher education, a student is eligible to
enroll in methods and other professional education classes including SPED classes above the SPED 200
   level.

3.    During their freshmen year, students should take the PPST and successfully pass all three portions of this test. Successful completion of this test is a criterion for admittance to teacher education. Failure to meet the levels established will keep a student from being eligible to be admitted to teacher education. A student may retake the test or any portion of it after remediation.   Success is best obtained after more extensive preparation in areas not passed.  Review sessions and preparation materials are available through the University College.

4.   Students must meet the requirements for admission to teacher education. Alternative policies exist for students of under-represented groups, students with diagnosed disabilities, post-baccalaureate students, and certified teachers.

5.   Students who have a grade point of less than 2.60 will not be allowed into their professional preparation classes.  Students needing to improve their grade points are advised to retake classes in which they received a "D" and "F" or reduce the overall hours for which they enroll in a particular semester.  Consideration of other career fields may also be appropriate.

6.   The general methods class (SEED 300, General Secondary School Teaching Methods) should be taken prior to the special methods classes (SEED 413, 7-12 Science Methods; BED 480, 7-12 Business Education; SEED 424, 7-12 Language Arts Methods; SEED 415, 7-12 Social Studies Methods; SEED 418, 7-12 Math Methods; SEED 411, 7-12 Speech Methods; PE 480, Teaching K-12 Physical Education; MFL 420, K-12 Foreign Language Methods; ARTE 414, K-12 Art Methods).  The special methods classes in the secondary major fields generally offered fall semester only.  The general methods class is not taught every semester; thus, it is necessary to plan accordingly.  Concurrent enrollment may be approved in special situations but must be based on a written request to the Dean clearly outlining the nature of the situation.  Some cases may be referred to the Teacher Education Committee for a decision.  Students will not be permitted to student teach unless

  • their cumulative GPA is a minimum of 2.60 and 2.60 in their major

  • 80% of the course work is completed

  • the methods requirements are completed with a grade of C or better

  • no incompletes in courses

  • C or better in all professional block courses
