SEQUENCE AND SUGGESTED SCHEDULE

Teacher Education Program Requirements

YEARS ONE AND TWO

 

  1. Meet with advisor.

  2. Complete the Praxis I, Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) with a minimum score of 173 in reading, 172 in English usage and writing, and 171 in math.

  3. Maintain a minimum cumulative and major GPA of 2.60.

  4. Complete a minimum of one semester in residence at NSU.

  5. Enroll and satisfactorily complete EPSY 302 and sophomore field experience, ENGL 101, and SPCM 101 or SPCM 215 or SPCM 222 with a grade of "C" or better.

  6. The "Application for Admission to Teacher Education" sheet is completed while taking EPSY 302 or can be obtained in the Teacher Education Office, GB-109. This is to be completed no later than the middle of the second semester of the sophomore year.

  7. Applications are reviewed by the Office of Education and candidates are recommended to the Dean of Education and presented to the Teacher Education Council prior to being admitted to teacher education.

  8. Students may select and begin taking classes in a minor field for an endorsement.  Endorsements may be obtained through Praxis II content testing and/or coursework.  See http://doe.sd.gov/oatq/praxis/docs/The%20Praxis%20Colored%20Sheet%20Bible.pdf for specific details of requirements.

  9. Elementary students must enroll in general education classes and major courses such as ELED 303, MATH 341, MATH 342, MUS 353, ARTE 310, LIBM 205, PE 360, EPSY 327 & SPED 100.

  10. Secondary students must enroll in general education classes and major field requirements as outlined by specific schools or departments.

 

YEAR THREE

 

Pre-requisite:  

  1. Elementary students must enroll in the morning methods block during the first semester, enroll in the afternoon block during the following semester, and complete the remaining professional courses in the major and minor. These courses could be taken during the second semester of the junior year and the first semester of the senior year.

  2. Secondary and K-12 students must enroll in Junior Field Experience courses during either semester of the junior year or the first semester of the senior year, complete remaining classes in the major and minor, and enroll in the Special Methods course in major field. This class should be taken after the Junior Field Block, if possible.  The special methods courses are only taught during the fall semesters.

  3. Complete "Application for Student Teaching" the semester prior to student teaching.

  

  YEAR FOUR

 

  1.  Maintain cumulative and major GPA of 2.60.

  2. Complete remaining requirements in the major and minor or endorsement areas.

  3. Attend the Pre-registration seminar.

  4. Successfully pass the Praxis II content exam and submit scores to the Education Office.

  5. Receive clearance from the Office of the Dean of Education and the Director of Field Experiences for admission to student teaching.

  6. Have a personal interview requesting student teaching placement.

  7. Complete Professional Semester Courses with minimum grades of C and successfully finish any outstanding incompletes.

  8. Attend the following seminars:

    • Student Teaching Orientation Seminar

    • Diversity Seminar

    • Culminating Seminar

  9. Complete the electronic portfolio started in the sophomore year and hand in at the Diversity Seminar during the last student teaching experience.

  10. Successfully complete student teaching.

  11. Demonstrate professional competence through the Praxis II, Principles of Learning and Teaching Test with achievement of passing score.  Teacher education students register and pay for Praxis II exit examinations.  Praxis II Specialty content exams must be passed for the major field prior to student teaching and in any areas for endorsements when certification is requested.
