ABSENCES AND SUBSTITUTE TEACHING

The student teacher must submit the completed Absence Report/Request form to the University Supervisor and Cooperating Teacher within one week of the absence.  University Supervisors will forward the Report/Request to the Field Experience office.  Failure to report absences may lead to a failing grade or an "Incomplete" in student teaching.  A planned absence must be requested in advance.  A copy of the Report/Request will be filed in the student teacher's file.  More than three student teaching absences will be made up.  Make-up assignments will be assigned by the Director of Field Experiences for seminar absences.

Occasionally there is a desire by the participating school for a Northern student teacher to substitute in the cooperating teacher's classroom.  In such a case, Northern asks that  (1) the student teacher be in the full-time responsibility stage or beyond, and (2) substituting for any length of time beyond one-day intervals is not recommended.  Payment of the student teacher who fills the role of substitute is up to the discretion of the school district.
