National Student Exchange Program (NSE) NSU’s participation in the National Student Exchange provides students with the opportunity to attend one of more than 174 different colleges and universities outside South Dakota, which eliminates non-resident tuition, fees and red tape associated with transferring. Students may exchange for one semester or one year and then return to their undergraduate work at NSU. For more information, contact the Admissions Office.
Financial Assistance
101 Dacotah Hall, 626-2640
Sharon Kienow, Director
Over $13,000,000 in federal, state, and local financial aid is awarded annually to about 80 percent of the student population. Assistance is in the form of grants, loans, scholarships, and employment. Most financial aid is awarded on the basis of need and determined by deducting the amount that a student and/or his or her parents can contribute towards educational expenses from the actual cost of attending Northern State University.
The primary financial aid programs are Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Perkins Loans, Workstudy, Stafford Loan, and Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. In addition, there are other sources of financial aid such as scholarships, PLUS Loans, private loans, vocational rehabilitation, JTPA/WIA, BIA grants, and veteran’s educational benefits.
Students applying for federal aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Priority is given to those who apply by March 1, each year.
NSU scholarships are generally awarded on the basis of excellent work or achievement rather than need and are handled by the individual departments. Contact the specific department offices regarding their selection procedure.
Federal regulations require that a student maintain satisfactory academic progress to receive federal student aid. Refer to the NSU Graduate and Undergraduate Catalog or contact the Financial Aid Office regarding NSU’s Satisfactory Progress Policy.
Detailed information explaining the financial aid application process is available through the NSU web site at www.northern.edu or by contacting the NSU Financial Aid Office located in Enrollment Services, Dacotah Hall 101.
