TECHNOLOGY HELP DESK

The NSU Help Desk is the first point of contact for faculty, staff and students who need information technology or multimedia assistance. E-mails (help@northern.edu), phone calls (626-2283) and walk-ins (MJ 144) are all welcome. When should you contact the help desk? When you need:

  • professional, courteous support for basic computing, audio/visual, and distance education services;

  • help with malfunctioning office technology (computers, printers, scanners, etc)

  • help with malfunctioning smart podiums or distance technologies

  • instructional technology equipment for your classroom or professional presentations

  • help with network issues such as account changes

  • information from online FAQ's, manuals, and tutorials that empower users to self-troubleshoot

  • a technology fellow or technical staff to assist you with a technology-related project

  • assistance with WebCT

The NSU Help Desk is open Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 5:00pm.

 

COMPUTER CENTER

The Computer Center provides a variety of computers for student use, such as Windows PCs and Macintoshes. Since these machines are also used for classes, it is best to check the schedule beside the door at the lab’s entrance or at the main desk.

All students are issued a network logon and password to use a computer in a lab, they will also receive a Northern email account.  New Students may pick up their logon and mail accounts at the main window, returning students may have their accounts reset if needed.  All students have space available on the network under their login name, this server is backed up daily.

All printing from the computer labs in the Administration Building and Spafford Hall can be picked up at the Computer Center desk.  Students must deposit money into their printing account at the main window in the Administration Building before printing anywhere.  Students printing in the Student Center, Lincoln Hall labs, English lab MJ-145 and all student computers in the library must set up print accounts at the Computer Center main window. Copies are three cents per black and white page except for those printing in the Library where the charge is 10 cents per page.  Color printing is available in the Computer Center labs only for 12 cents per page, this can print on both sides for the same price.

The Computer Center provides the following services:

  • use of a high-end colored printers(25 cents per page), heavier paper
  • check-out of headsets, speakers and microphones, firewire cables with security from the main window;
  • selling of CDs, Flashdrives, disks, DVD’s patch cables, zip disks, DVC tapes, network cards for laptops and desktop computers, and misc. computer and printer supplies
  • burning your work to CD's
  • scanners
  • The Computer Center staff tries to provide assistance with questions about standard software applications.

     

    The Computer Center is normally open:     

Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m.
Sunday, 2 to 11 p.m.
Changes in these hours, as well as vacation and break hours, will be posted at the Computer Center desk and all outside doors in Admn, Sp and DH buildings.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN

The department of Instructional Technology and Design provides the following services:

  • design and assistance for Internet courses;
  • software support and training for faculty, staff and students;
  • WebCT instruction and support; and
  • electronic portfolio assistance.

MEDIA SERVICES

Beulah Williams Library, 626-2426

The Media Center provides the following services:

  • distance delivery assistance;
  • multimedia production and assistance;
  • laminating;
  • burning CDs;
  • dubbing tapes;
  • making transparencies;
  • scanning;
  • color printing; and
  • check-out of digital cameras and laptops (same day check-out for school projects only).

Clubs may borrow overheads, smartcarts or TV/VCR carts.
