Student Involvement Awards


Below are the outstanding students and staff that were recognized for their contributions and achievements to campus life at NSU. The 21st Annual NSU Student Involvement Awards Banquet was held on April 29, 2008 with 102 students and staff in attendance.

Overall 85 students and clubs were nominated by students and staff for these various awards.  All awards were peer-nomination based and chosen by a selection committee of various staff.  Congratulations to the recipients and to all the students for their commitment and efforts this previous year. Awards & Criteria

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT OF THE YEAR: This award is open to all programs sponsored by registered student organizations. Additional selection criteria include the support and encouragement of student growth and development as well as degree of creativity and impact on community and campus life. Self-nomination is allowed for this award.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: This award is open to all students who have demonstrated significant contributions of personal time and talent to their community through individual or service organizations. Additional criteria include providing leadership, facilitating change and involving others. You must be nominated by a peer or recognized student organization to be eligible for this award. Self-nomination is not allowed for this award.

OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: This award is open to all freshman students that have become actively involved in campus organizations and activities. Additional criteria include enthusiasm and serving as a positive role model. You must be nominated by a peer or recognized student organization to be eligible for this award. Self-nomination is not allowed for this award.

MOST IMPROVED STUDENT ORGANIZATION: This award is open to all registered student organizations in good standing. Additional selection criteria include the demonstration of increased positive activities in the organizations and fulfillment of goals and purposes as stated in the organizations constitution. Organizations are allowed to nominated themselves for this award.

OUTSTANDING PROGRAM OF THE YEAR: The Outstanding Program of the Year is open to all student organizations and the programs that they sponsor. This program must be documented as a university sponsored event and must fall within the universities guidelines and mission. Organizations are allowed to nominate themselves for this award.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION ADVISOR OF THE YEAR: This award goes to the advisor of the organization that goes above and beyond the call of duty. This award recognizes the countless hours of dedication and service to making their organization successful while benefiting the overall quality of student life at Northern. The nomination must come from a student. Advisors that receive pay or stipend for this award are eligible.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR: This award is open to student organizations in good standing. The work done by the Student Organization of the Year represents the fulfillment of the goals set forth by the club in its constitution. This organization is one that measures its success through service to the campus community, and by its contributions to make campus life at NSU a better place for all. Organizations are allowed to nominate themselves for this award.

INTRAMURAL SPORTSMAN & SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR:  This honor is nominated by the student body and voted on and discussed by the Intramural Central Staff and Board of Directors.  The criteria for this award include leadership on and off the field and/or court, sportsmanship, character, and athletic skill.  The recipient of this award has also served as an ambassador for the sport through involvement, serving as a team captain, and helping advance the program with new ideas.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEADER OF THE YEAR: This award is open to all students that have shown excellence in leadership and the ability to make a  positive influence on others through their work within NSU student organizations. Please note significant accomplishments and document a measurable outcome of leadership in the nomination. You must be nominated by a peer or recognized student organization to be eligible for this award. Self-nominations are not allowed.

EXCELLENCE IN STUDENT INVOLVEMENT: This award is open to individual students who have demonstrated involvement in the campus community throughout their enrollment at NSU (not just current year). Seniors graduating during the 2005 year are eligible and must have a 3.25 gpa. Additional criteria include extensive involvement, community activities, personal integrity, exemplary character, and a commitment of nurturing and fostering leadership skills to several other students. You must be nominated by a peer or recognized student organization to be eligible for this award. Self-nomination is not allowed for this award.

OUTSTANDING RESIDENT ASSISTANT: Qualifications for the Outstanding Resident Assistant include a cumulative gpa of 3.0, taking 12 course credits, consistent display of objectivity in all situations, good character, a positive attitude within the hall, demonstrated conflict resolution skills, and display of maintaining a balance between the RA position, academics, and other extra-curricular activities. Nomination is allowed by Hall Directors and residents of that hall. Self-nomination is not allowed.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT EMPLOYEE: This award recognizes the efforts of any student who works on any work-study, student labor, or Federal grant funded position that directly serves NSU. Work-study positions that are based off campus are eligible for this award. Individual must work 10 hours a week and be enrolled in 12 course credits. The student employee demonstrates the desire to work above and beyond what is required of their job duties and maintains a professional work ethic at all times. Nomination is allowed by staff, faculty or any individual that is served directly or indirectly by the nominated student employee. Self-nomination is not allowed.

2007 20th Annual Student Involvement Awards Banquet

Below are the outstanding students and staff that were recognized for their contributions and achievements to campus life at NSU. The banquet was held on April 25, 2007 with 89 students and staff in attendance.

Overall 48 students were nominated by students and staff for these various awards.  All awards were peer-nomination based and chosen by a selection committee of various staff.  Congratulations to the recipients and to all the students for their commitment and efforts this previous year.
