Kappa Mu Epsilon (Math Club)

Northern State University is the only university in South Dakota that has a local Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) chapter.

KME is a national mathematics honor society.  There are currently 140 or more KME chapters in 34 states. Northern has had its chapter since 1992, and 84 people have been inducted into the organization since then.

Potential members do not need to be math majors or minors in order to join.  They need to enjoy mathematics and be willing to share that joy with others.  The requirements for becoming a member include: 1. being a faculty member or regularly enrolled student at an institution with a KME chapter, 2. must have completed three semesters at the institution ranking in the upper 35% of his or her class, 3. must have completed at least three college math courses including at least 1 semester of calculus and attained an average grade of B or higher in all math courses.  If a student has transferred to an institution with a KME chapter, he or she must meet the previous requirements in addition to completing a math course at the institution and attaining a grade of B or higher.

Student's from Northern have been active on the local, regional, and national levels.  Locally, the members have had low-cost tutoring sessions, put together college algebra handbooks, been in the Gypsy Day parade, and put together a campus phone book.  Members have also presented papers at both the regional and national conventions.
