I teach biology at Northern State University. If it is outdoors and not rooted down, I’ve probably taught it. Come to think of it, I've also taught plant systematics. I most enjoy ornithology and nonmajors biology. Recently I have offered a team-taught course in environmental photography.
I am editor of South Dakota Bird Notes, the journal of the South Dakota Ornithologists’ Union. I co-authored The Birds of South Dakota. My major interests are canoe-camping in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota and birding. I also enjoy photography and other Arts. Click here to see three of my photographs. A few years ago I had a show on photographs of Chaco Canyon. Lately I have experimented with digital photography. My photographic lifelist of North American birds can be seen here.
I earned my Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in Zoology and Physiology. During our graduate work in Peru, my wife Erika and I discovered a new bird, Nephalornis oneillii and had a bird named after us, Pipreola riefferi tallmanarum
