Size and description 

The Tasmanian Native Hen is a large flightless rail. Approximate adult length is 430 mm. Males weigh approximately 1334 gms, females slightly less. Both sexes are similar in description. Brown above and grey below, it has a yellow beak and red eyes. A white patch is seen in adult birds on the mid-flank. Juveniles are usually a duller copy of the adult colours. The species is usually seen alone or in small groups. When disturbed it will run swiftly to seek cover, using its wings to assist with balance. It has been recorded as having a running speed of up top 50 km per hour. It will even swim to escape danger if necessary.
