Everyone begins with an A.
Lower one third of a letter grade (A to A-, A- to B+, B+ to B, etc.)
  • if the assignment is in a minor key.
  • if the key signature uses more than 3 accidentals.
  • if the time signature is not in 2, 3 or 4.
  • for each writing rule which is violated more than 3 times.
Lower a letter grade (A to B, B to C, etc.)
  • if the assignment is late.
  • if the exposition's 2nd theme is not in the dominant.
  • if the recapitulation's 2nd theme is not in the tonic.
Lower two letter grades (A to C, B to D, etc.)
  • if there is no development.
  • if no discernable 2nd theme exists.
The following criteria are subject to the instructor's artistic discretion:
  • Raise from one third to a whole letter grade for outstanding music.
  • Lower from one third to a whole letter grade for counterpoint lacking in 3rds or 6ths.
