Objectives:
This course will offer the student a practical guide to the theory and practice of theatrical makeup. Students will become familiar with the traditional and color theory approaches to makeup. Various conceptual and technical problems will be studied and solved. At the end of this course, the student will be able to...
Texts (required)
Stage Makeup by Richard Corson and James Glavan (Allyn & Bacon, 9th edition, 2001)
Supplies (required)
Ben Nye Makeup Kit (available in the NSU Bookstore), hand towel, makeup remover (student's personal choice and can be either cold cream, baby oil, baby wipes or commercial makeup remover), bar of soap in a container, old shirt or smock, headband, pencil sharpener, and colored pencils for the makeup worksheets (available in the NSU Bookstore)
Grading:
Grading is based on a system of points given for successful completion of assignments. The makeup application projects (fictional character project, middle aged character project, old age character project, animal makeup project and final project) will be completed in class. Studio work involves the work on specific makeup problems (scars, beards, etc.) and is completed in class. The makeup running crew will be on call for all the dress rehearsals and performances of the fall musical (Monday, October 28th through Saturday, November 2nd). The makeup running crew will also assist in the strike and cleaning of the makeup room following the final performance on November 2nd. If you are cast in the musical or are assigned a stage management responsibility, that will be taken into consideration in assessing your makeup crew participation. The makeup morgue is an ongoing project, and is due at the final class meeting, December 13th. There is no final exam for this class.
The point breakdown is as follows:
Participation
The primary work of this class is the exploration of the potential that makeup can add to character and to production. It is a practical course focusing on individual development. In order to register any improvement, you must work consistently, in and out of class. You must be prepared to work on the first day listed below for each makeup assignment. Missed sessions or sessions for which you are not prepared cannot be re-scheduled due to time constraints.
Requiremeents
Makeup Application Projects: Four (4) makeup projects will be approached in class. They are:
Final Makeup Project: Each student will create a character "look" of their own choice. The makeup will be created in the final class meeting Friday, December 13th. The final project will be assessed on creativity, imagination, level of complexity and execution. The project must also be accompanied with the following: a completed, colored makeup worksheet (p. 37 in the Corson/Glavan text), preparation and analysis, a color photograph is required, manipulation of features to achieve a satisfactory character "look"
Makeup Morgue: The makeup morgue will be graded as follows: a minimum of 100 pictures must be collected and organized into specific categories (see p. 48 in the Corson/Glavan text for categories). It will be presented for grading at the last class meeting Friday, December 13th. It must be presented in a three ring binder, and organized for easy accessibility.
Makeup Running Crew: Each student (whether cast or not) will be required to help all the actors with their individual makeup. Each student's willingness to help and assist will determine the points assessed.
Assignments
Each student is responsible for all in-class assignments. Failure to complete any assignment will result in a zero points for that assignment. Due to the obvious time constraints, no special arrangements will be made to make up missed assignments.
Attendance
Weekly attendance and sign-in is required. Since the class only meets once a week, it is essential that each student be at every class. Part of learning is observing and therefore each student's attendance will insure maximum opportunities to learn. Since projects must be completed in class on scheduled days, an absence could adversely affect the point outcome. Please note that this is a course which places a high value on participation and observation. Therefore this is a firm and non-negotiable policy and each absence will result in your final point total being lowered one point. This policy will be enforced.
