The Final Project


Your Final Project will be the scenic design for a play of your choice. The work should be able to be presented in a single set and produced on a community or educational theatre budget. Choose a title that is worth doing.

Presentation #1
Prepare a written report. Include...

  1. A justification of why your play should be produced,
  2. A description of how the work was probably originally presented,
  3. The date and place of the play's action,
  4. A scene breakdown: Include act and scene number, location, and time of day,
  5. A list of specific units of scenery needed to stage the action of the play,
  6. A list of major set props used by the actor, and
  7. Locate the plays climax and two of its crisis points.

Presentation #2
Find and bring to class copies of five art works (paintings, photographs of architecture, etc.) from the period and local of the play's action. Indicate how you could use the color, texture or visual compositions from these art works in your final design.

Presentation #3
Develop, and bring to class, three action drawings. One for your play's climax and one for each of the two crisis points.

Presentation #4
Develop, and bring to class, four to six rough thumbnail scenic sketches.

Final Presentation
Your final presentation to the class should include...

  1. A virtual model of your design,
  2. A floor plan,
  3. A designer's elevation (or flat schedule) of the entire show including backing flats. and
  4. A colored rendering of your set indicating how it will look under light. You may use any color media you wish.
