VA education benefits are authorized to veterans and qualified dependents under specific chapters of Title 38, U.S. Code. Benefits can be received from only one VA educational chapter at a time, even if there is eligibility under multiple chapters.

The following information will be required to process your VA educational benefits through the NSU Veterans Affairs Office:
Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR/Chapter 1606)
- Army/Air National Guard/Reserve
New applicants and transfer students may apply at va.gov.
Then, submit the following documentation to the school certifying official at the Registrar’s Office in Dacotah Hall 103:
- Copy of DD-214
- Copy of Certificate of Eligibility
- Copy of Kicker Contract if eligible
- Completed NSU Veteran Information Sheet
- And, order your Joint Services Transcript
APPLICANTS UNDER CHAPTER 1607 (REAP)
- Army/Air National Guard/Reserve who were activated at least 90 days after Sept. 11, 2001
New applicants and transfer students may apply at va.gov.
Then, submit the following documentation to the school certifying official at the Registrar’s Office in Dacotah Hall 103:
- Copy of DD-214
- Copy of Certificate of Eligibility
- Copy of Kicker Contract if eligible
- Completed NSU Veteran Information Sheet
- And, order your Joint Services Transcript
Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (MGIB-AD/Chapter 30)
- Active Duty
New applicants and transfer students may apply at va.gov.
Then, submit the following documentation to the school certifying official at the Registrar’s Office in Dacotah Hall 103:
- Copy of DD-214
- Copy of Kicker Contract if eligible
- Copy of Certificate of Eligibility
- Completed NSU Veteran Information Sheet
- And, order your Joint Services Transcript
Vocational Rehab and Employment Services (VRE/Chapter 31)
- Vocational Rehabilitation
- Contact the regional office in Sioux Falls: 605-333-6845
- Provide NSU with 28-1905
- Complete the NSU Veteran Information Sheet
- Order your Joint Services Transcript
Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33 and Yellow Ribbon Program)
- Individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after Sept. 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days
New applicants and transfer students may apply at va.gov.
Then, submit the following documentation to the school certifying official at the Registrar’s Office in Dacotah Hall 103:
- Copy of DD-214
- Copy of Certificate of Eligibility
- Copy of Kicker Contract if eligible
- Copy of Certificate of Eligibility
- Completed NSU Veteran Information Sheet
- If not a South Dakota resident, completed Application for Resident Status
- And, order your Joint Services Transcript
Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA/Chapter 35)
- Survivors/dependents of U.S. military veterans
New applicants and transfer students may apply at va.gov.
Then, submit the following documentation to the school certifying official at the Registrar’s Office in Dacotah Hall 103:
