COVID-19 News
Through the S.D. Department of Health, Northern has secured BinaxNOW/Quidel over the counter COVID tests. These test kits are free to NSU faculty, staff and students. Students can pick up their kits at Student Affairs (Avera Student Center 222). Faculty and staff should check with their direct supervisors. Complimentary COVID testing for all South Dakotans are still available through Vault Health’s website as well. These are available for both symptomatic/asymptomatic and vaccinated/unvaccinated individuals. For additional COVID-19 information, visit northern.edu/covid-19, covid.sd.gov or cdc.gov.
Dr. Joseph Bottum Speaking at NSU
Dr. Joseph Bottum, professor and director of the CLASSICS Institute at Dakota State University, will speak at Northern State University on March 28. Bottum will present “The Church of Christ Without Christ: The Religious Origins of Identity Politics” at 7 p.m. in Johnson Fine Arts Center Room 181, also known as the “Blue Room.” The public is welcome to the event, which is sponsored by the NSU Center for Public History and Civic Engagement. Drawing on his book, “An Anxious Age: The Post-Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of America,” Bottum will discuss the manner in which contemporary political debates regarding identity politics find their origins in certain religious ideas, with identity politics being essentially a religious phenomenon.
SDBOR to meet March 29-30
The South Dakota Board of Regents will meet March 29-30 at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. More information can be found here, or view the full BOR agenda here. Hygiene Drive
The Pre-Health Club is hosting a hygiene drive for Safe Harbor. They are in need of the following items: oral care products, conditioner and other hair care products, toilet paper, feminine products, laundry soap, cleaning supplies, diapers (all sizes), and baby wipes. Donations can be dropped off in Graham 114 or Science Center 217 until April 1.
‘Be Northern’ Nominations
Do you know someone in the NSU campus community who should be featured on Northern social media? Nominate a student, faculty, staff or alum to be featured as a Be Northern on NSU Instagram and Facebook! Nominated are accepted through this online form.
Spring 2022 Job Fair
The Spring 2022 Aberdeen Area and NSU Job Fair will take place take place 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, in Northern’s Avera Student Center. The event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by NSU Career Services, Hub City Radio, Aberdeen Area Department of Labor/Job Service and the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce. NSU students will have the opportunity to not only find employment, but also meet with potential graduate and professional schools, and academic advisors to discuss majors and minors that will help students succeed in their future career. March 29 marks the inaugural game for the NSU Softball Team at Koehler Hall of Fame Field. The Wolves will be facing off against the Dragons of MSU Moorhead at noon and 2 p.m. There will be a student tailgate before the first game starting at 10:30 a.m. with food and inflatables along with multiple prizes to be given out throughout the games, including an Apple watch and Apple airpods. What’s more fun than food, fun and softball? We hope to see you there!
Noon Forums
This week’s NSU Noon Forum, “Five Essential Women’s History Month Films” with Dr. Kristi Brownfield, will take place at noon Wednesday, March 30, in the Williams Library Rotunda. Forums, which are free and open to the public, continue throughout the semester as follows:

Cultural Jubilee is March 31
Northern State University student groups will hold a Cultural Jubilee on Thursday, March 31. The event, open to all students, faculty, staff and community members, will take place 7-9 p.m. in the Kessler’s Champions Club in the NSU Barnett Center Addition. The jubilee is sponsored by Northern’s Campus Activities Board, Native American Student Association, Impact Dance Club and International Student Organization.
Science and Math Fair
Thursday, March 31, 2022, will be the 39th year of NSU sponsoring the Northern South Dakota Science and Mathematics Fair. The day starts out with approximately 60 judges from surrounding areas judging projects and interviewing students. Projects will be judged in the morning and will be open for public viewing 1-7 p.m. only. The science fair awards ceremony, open to the public and free of charge, will begin at 6 p.m. in Johnson Fine Arts Center Room 181. Twenty schools from the surrounding area and about 300 junior and senior high school students participate in the fair annually. The students come from Brown, Campbell, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Hyde, Marshall, McPherson, Roberts, Spink and Walworth counties. Junior and senior high science bowls, held in conjunction with the fair, will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The public is invited to attend.
Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum
The annual NSU Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, in the Beulah Williams Library. All students participating in scholarly activity are invited to participate. Submissions of abstracts are due April 1. This isn’t your regular book club. No set books to read (that's the "silent" part), no pressure to share or discuss. Never worry if you haven't finished the book. No judgment.
Simply bring yourself and whatever you're currently reading (we don't care about genres or formats, anything goes!) All readers are welcome—even e-readers. The Silent Book Club is about community. Everyone is welcome, and anyone can join.
Please consider joining if you are unable to find time and space to just enjoy a book. That's it! No pressure whatsoever.

Honors Program Speaker
The Honors Program will host speaker, author and former “Survivor” contestant Holly Hoffman at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6. The event, which is free and open to campus and the community, will take place in the Kessler’s Champions Club Room in the NSU Barnett Center addition.
GiveNDay is Coming! April 6-7, 2022: The Northern State Foundation is excited to host our second annual day of giving, GiveNDay, on April 6, 2022! This 24-hour challenge is designed to inspire all supporters of Northern to come together as we work to provide funding across the university. Last year was a huge success as our community raised $193,000 from over 1,200 donors. Also known as #OneDayOnePack, this year’s goal is to receive support from 1,800 donors in 24 hours.
GiveNDay Ambassadors wanted! We need your help! We are looking for students, faculty or alumni to represent their school, department, organization or team as Ambassadors. As Ambassadors, you have the opportunity to share your love of NSU with your family and friends via social media, and earn rewards for yourself as well as for your team/school, program or organization. The top Ambassador will earn $500 towards the organization they are advocating for. The top student Ambassador will earn $250 in Nike Team Store Gear, and the top non-student Ambassador will win a tailgating spot for an NSU Wolves football game during the 2022 season (date to be agreed upon by purchaser and recipient). Northern Lights Launch Party Rescheduled
The annual Northern Lights launch party has been rescheduled for April 6, 2022, at 6 p.m. in the Lincoln Art Gallery (LH 115). Print issues will be available for purchase (cash or check accepted) at the launch party and afterward by contacting current President Madi Filber via email at madi.filber@wolves.northern.edu, who can also answer any questions via email. All students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome!
Presidential Investiture
The campus community is invited to the Investiture Ceremony of Dr. Neal Schnoor, 18th President of Northern State University, at 10 a.m. Friday, April 8. The ceremony will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater, with a reception immediately following in the JFAC lobby. Military Veterans Affairs News:
- National Medal of Honor Day on March 25 recognized all Medal of Honor recipients. The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest medal for valor in combat awarded to military members. The President of the United States awards the Medal of Honor for acts of bravery above and beyond the call of duty. On this day, we recognized all 3,525 soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguard and Mary Edwards Walker (the only woman) awarded a Medal of Honor.
- Vietnam Veterans Day is put in place to recognize and thank those who served. Vietnam Veterans Day recognizes the veterans who served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. The last combat troops were withdrawn from Vietnam on March 29, 1973, which is now known as the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. Today, Americans are encouraged to display the U.S. flag in honor of the men and women who served, were wounded or never made it back home.
- NSU Hosting American Legion Cording Ceremony: On May 4, 2022, from 1800-1900, Northern Military Veteran Affairs will host the American Legion Cording Ceremony for graduating service members and veterans. The Aberdeen American Legion Post presents a red, white and blue cord to graduates honoring and celebrating dedicated service to the U.S. and Aberdeen citizens. Students wear the cords at commencement. The program is open to family, friends and the Aberdeen community. (Location to be determined.)
- Enrollment Certifications: Each semester the NSU Military Veteran Affairs staff certify enrollments for students receiving Military Tuition Assistance, South Dakota State Tuition Assistance or Veteran Education Benefits. The staff submits certifications after the census date for each term.

American Indian Circle Program
NSU is dedicated to the recognition of tribal traditions and ceremonies that complement the holistic well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native students. The American Indian Circle Program would like to invite the NSU campus community to participate in our monthly Smudge the first Tuesday of every month from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. This is a time where we come together and have cultural education time to talk about what smudging is, the importance it symbolizes in Indigenous culture and a time of reflection. For the spring 2022 semester, we will smudge in the courtyard outside MJ 112, which is the new Circle Program student space under the Student Success Center. Everyone is welcome!

HOW TO EARN POINTS
All regular season home competitions are worth 10 points. Some games are worth 20 points and are promoted as “Double Howling Wolves Points” games. If you attend two or more separate athletic events in the same day (i.e. football and volleyball) then you will receive an additional 5 points for that day. Double-header events (i.e. basketball, baseball, and softball) are worth 10 points throughout the entirety of the doubleheader.
All points reset each month allowing for a new opportunity each month to win the monthly prize.
All home athletic events are FREE for NSU Students who have a valid student ticket so there is no required cost to be a part of the Howling Wolves.
All Howling Wolves members are highly encouraged to sit in the designated Student Section at all home athletic events. Become an active member of the Howling Wolves Student Fan Club and help us defend our territory! GO WOLVES!!
