Faculty Snapshot: Dr. George Nora

Dr. George Nora is associate professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at NSU.

As a professor, Nora hopes to impart knowledge, integrity and a passion for science onto his students. He also makes an effort to interact with many of his students individually.

“During my college years, there were a thousand of us chemistry majors. You were very much a number,” said Nora. “No one should have to feel like that. I want to do it right.”

Originally from Illinois, Nora attended community college for two years where he got his associate’s degree in science.

Nora attended University of Illinois for his B.A in chemistry, and his M.S at Illinois State.

“I wanted to teach, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do research,” said Nora. “So I went on to get my Ph.D. at Notre Dame in south Indiana.”

Teaching at Northern

After getting his Ph.D., Nora did his post-doctoral research at Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Florida, until he obtained his position at Northern.

“I was part of the chemistry club in college and got to do experiment demonstrations,” said Nora. “I think the ‘wow’ factor is really where I got my love for teaching.”

Nora hopes to do more demonstrations when NSU’s new Regional Science Education Center opens, especially for Northern Bound days.

“Since I have started here, Northern has been going up nonstop,” said Nora. “No matter where you are in the community— a teacher, a student, an employee— Northern is always improving. It’s good for everyone.”

Besides teaching at Northern, Nora enjoys gardening, hunting and spending time with his family.
